Leather thickness varies by product type and intended use:
- Thin (<2mm): Ideal for apparel, delicate accessories, and stamping
- Medium (2–4mm): Perfect for wallets, belts, bookmarks, and everyday bags
- Thick (4mm+): Designed for structural items, heavy-use bags, and furniture
Specific thickness for each product is listed on its product page. For thickness recommendations based on your project, contact support@mulchleather.com.
Yes, absolutely. Natural leather celebrates authenticity. Variations in color, texture, grain pattern, and natural markings (scars, brands, insect bites) are normal and desirable—they prove your leather is genuine.
Each hide is unique, just like natural wood or stone. These variations add character and tell the story of the animal. We do not bleach, sand away, or artificially "correct" these features. Your leather will be one-of-a-kind.
Yield refers to the usable area of a hide after removing defects and edges. Not all of a raw hide is usable—natural variation, scars, and imperfections mean the actual workable surface is smaller than the total hide size.
Each product listing includes the expected yield so you know exactly how much material you're getting. This ensures transparency and helps you plan your projects accurately.
Our hides are graded based on factors like natural variation, imperfections, and usability. Higher grades represent more uniform, pristine hides with fewer defects and better usable area.
For detailed grading information on a specific hide type, check the product page or contact support@mulchleather.com.
Leather Types & Comparisons
Full Grain retains the entire hide surface, including natural marks and scars. It's the most durable, develops rich patina, and is considered the highest quality. Full Grain leather becomes more beautiful with age.
Top Grain has the surface lightly sanded and treated, creating a more uniform appearance while remaining durable. Top Grain is more forgiving of minor imperfections but develops character less dramatically than Full Grain.
For maximum durability and character development, choose Full Grain. For a more consistent appearance, Top Grain is excellent.
Nappa is soft, supple leather traditionally made from lamb, goat, or calf hides using chrome tanning. It's smooth and luxurious with a velvety feel, making it ideal for accessories, apparel, and upholstery.
Nappa is less rigid than Full Grain but still durable when properly cared for. We offer Nappa in up to 25 colors, all properly treated to prevent dye bleeding.
Lambskin is exceptionally soft, lightweight, and smooth. It's prized for accessories, garments, and fine upholstery due to its buttery texture and delicate appearance.
Lambskin is properly treated and available in multiple colors with no dye-bleed issues. Like Nappa, it requires careful handling but rewards you with incredible suppleness and comfort.
Suede is leather sanded on the surface to create a soft, velvety texture. It's lighter and softer than Full Grain but more delicate and requires careful maintenance.
Suede shows marks and stains more readily, so it's better suited for accessories or indoor upholstery rather than high-traffic furniture. It's luxurious but demands respect and proper care.
Hair-On cowhide retains the cow's natural hair, creating a striking, textured aesthetic. It's incredibly durable and naturally stain-resistant due to the hair guard.
Hair-On is perfect for rugs, throws, and statement furniture. The natural variation in hair color and pattern makes each piece unique. This is one of our most durable leather types.
Crazy Horse is a Full Grain leather treated to enhance color variation and aging. It develops a distinctive worn, vintage look quickly—often within weeks of use.
This leather is ideal if you want rapid patina development and a rustic, lived-in aesthetic. For detailed information about Crazy Horse characteristics and care, contact support@mulchleather.com.
Pull-Up is a Full Grain leather that changes color when stretched or handled, displaying lighter tones underneath the surface. Over time, it develops a rich, personalized patina.
Pull-Up is ideal for accessories and items that will be handled frequently. For care specifics and detailed information about color change characteristics, reach out to support@mulchleather.com.
The best choice depends on your project goals:
- Durability & longevity: Full Grain, Top Grain, Hair-On
- Softness & comfort: Nappa, Lambskin
- Visual uniqueness: Crazy Horse, Pull-Up, Hair-On
- Accessories: Nappa, Lambskin, Suede
- High-traffic furniture: Full Grain, Top Grain, Hair-On

Nappa & Lambskin Colors
We offer up to 25 colors in both Nappa and Lambskin leather. Each color is properly treated and available across our online catalog.
Browse the product pages to see our full color range, and contact support@mulchleather.com if you're looking for a specific shade or custom order options.
Our Nappa and Lambskin leathers are properly treated, and dye bleeding should not occur. Color will develop a natural patina over time—slight deepening is normal and desirable.
Avoid excessive moisture or rubbing against light fabrics during the first wear. With proper care, the leather will remain vibrant and beautiful for years.
Nappa and Lambskin require gentle care due to their softness:
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth regularly
- For spills, blot immediately—do not rub
- Avoid harsh chemicals and excessive water
- Condition 1–2 times yearly with a leather conditioner suitable for delicate hides
These leathers reward careful maintenance with a permanently supple, beautiful finish.
Yes, but with considerations. Both are perfect for accent chairs, ottomans, and low-traffic seating. They're less ideal for high-use sofas or household items that receive constant contact.
Nappa and Lambskin are excellent for upholstery, accessories, and garments. For heavy-use furniture, consider Full Grain or Top Grain leather instead.
Hair-On Cowhide
Hair-On cowhide sheets are available in multiple sizes and pack options to suit different projects.
Specific dimensions and pack configurations are listed on each product page. For custom pack options or bulk orders, contact support@mulchleather.com to discuss your needs.
Shedding is normally very minimal. When you first receive a Hair-On piece or during routine cleaning, a few loose hairs may appear. This is completely normal.
Initial light shedding should settle within a few weeks as loose surface hairs are removed. After that, shedding becomes negligible with proper care.
Hair-On cowhide is naturally resilient and easy to maintain:
- Vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and maintain the hair
- For spills, blot immediately with a damp cloth
- The hair naturally protects the leather underneath, so most spills come up easily without harsh chemicals
- Avoid harsh scrubbing—the hair is resilient but benefits from gentle handling
- For stubborn stains, use a mild soap and water solution
Absolutely. Hair-On is one of the most durable leather types. The natural hair provides protection and stain resistance, making it ideal for high-traffic areas, homes with pets, and active households.
Hair-On rugs and furniture actually improve with use—the hair settles and patterns develop character over time.
Yes. Hair-On pieces work beautifully in bedrooms as accent chairs, throws, or decorative rugs. The natural texture adds warmth and visual interest.
Just avoid placing directly against light-colored fabrics during the first few weeks, as initial light shedding may occur. Once settled, Hair-On is completely stable.
Our cowhide rugs feature a natural suede backing, which provides grip and durability while maintaining breathability.
However, in high-traffic areas or on very smooth hardwood or tile, a rug pad is recommended to help prevent slipping and protect your flooring. Rug pads are inexpensive and provide added security and comfort.
Yes. Cowhide rugs are extremely durable and naturally suited for high-traffic spaces. Heavy foot traffic actually helps the leather develop character and patina.
A rug pad is recommended in high-traffic areas to prevent slipping and reduce friction on the backing.
Cowhide Furniture
Premium cowhide furniture, with proper care, lasts 10–25+ years. The leather becomes richer and more beautiful with age, developing patina and character.
Durability depends on leather type, use intensity, and maintenance. Full Grain and Top Grain are built for longevity. Treat your furniture with basic care, and it becomes a family heirloom.
Cowhide furniture typically supports 300–450 lbs, depending on the piece. Exact weight capacity for each specific product is listed in its product description. This accounts for the leather, frame, and filling.
For questions about a particular item, check the product page or contact support@mulchleather.com.
Some pieces require assembly, but most furniture arrives partially assembled to minimize the work on your end. Assembly instructions are included with every order.
Basic tools like a screwdriver or Allen wrench are typically all you'll need. If you have assembly questions, contact support@mulchleather.com.
Yes. Full Grain, Top Grain, and Hair-On cowhide are all excellent for high-traffic living spaces. They resist wear, hide minor scuffs well, and develop beautiful patina from use.
In fact, high-traffic use is ideal for cowhide—it accelerates the aging process and character development. Families with pets and children choose cowhide specifically for its durability.
Full Grain cowhide is naturally scratch-resistant and hides minor marks beautifully. Light scratches blend into the patina.
Deeper scratches are rare but can occur with sharp objects—this is normal for leather and part of its story. Over time, scratches darken and become part of the leather's character rather than imperfections.
Yes. Cowhide is an excellent choice for homes with pets. It is durable, naturally stain-resistant, and does not hold onto pet odors or dander like fabric upholstery.
While claws can occasionally leave light marks, these generally blend into the natural texture and markings of the hide over time. Most pet hair, dirt, and spills can be easily wiped away with a damp cloth.
